The short answer is sometimes it’s better to start with privates.

Private lessons are a great way for you and instructor to meet, to focus just on you and to build up your confidence.

The reason I started dancing was that I had a medical condition and it was called hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is where your palms sweat so much that it’s a medical condition. So, from the age of 13 to the age of 22, I strugglef with shaking people’s hands and then seeing them clean off their wet hands off on their jeans.

Holding a girl’s hand and we’re walking down the street and she says, are you nervous? I’m like, no, I’m not nervous. It was hard. It was hard to even pat someone’s back without being self-conscious because of my sweaty palm. So what I did was, at the age of 22, I got an operation done to prevent my palms from sweating. Then, I took Salsa classes because honestly, I was tired of feeling uncomfortable in my own skin and not being able to hold a girl’s hand.

I had a lot of anxiety. I remember that first class I’m actually funny enough and what made it easy for me was the first two classes. I had a friend of mine joined and we partnered up. So, that’s another thing you can do, bring along a friend with you. If you have someone that you feel comfortable with or even a family member to dance with them. Funny enough, it was actually hard for me because she took two classes and then she dropped out. So, I was put in the rotation with everybody else but it got easier and better. Now, 10 years later, this is my home and I run this school.

So, ONE, you can do private lessons with an instructor.

Two, bring in a friend to dance with you, someone that you feel comfortable with.

Three, stretch yourself a little bit and sign up for group classes. Take the classes and grow through that. I’m a strong believer that if you wait long enough that it’s already comfortable, then you’ve waited too long. And I feel like that’s my biggest regret in life, waiting too long because I’m uncomfortable.

So definitely, to get it easy for yourself, do the private. Bring a friend or a family member, take it with them or just push through and jump into the rotations. At our school, you will definitely feel loved, cared for and accepted. That’s a big part of anxiety, that you don’t feel like you’re enough, you don’t feel like you’ll get it, you’ll embarrass yourself or you’ll embarrass them.

I work hard in my school and all the instructors in my school work really hard to be super understanding and empathetic. That’s what you’ll get here. You’ll get a sense of belonging, so it takes some courage to take a leap and sign up.
