Can I Dance Salsa Without A Partner?

Can I Dance Salsa without a partner? Absolutely! And there is no reason to feel awkward about it at all. The majority of students at Toronto Dance Salsa sign up individually – around 60 – 70%.  Funny story – I signed up with a partner but then she abandoned me after two classes! Not really, but I was too nervous to sign up alone so a friend and I signed up together.. Then she left the country to study abroad. But after two classes, I was hooked. I finished all the levels as an individual. Here are some reasons why signing up for dance classes as an individual at Toronto Dance Salsa is so rewarding and so much fun!

No Drop-Ins

I know this might seem like a negative but it is definitely not. By not having drop-ins we can balance the number of leaders and followers in a class, so you always have someone to dance with. It also means you are building on what you have learned each week. This way you will not be learning a basic move one week and an advanced move you may not be ready for the next week.

New Friends!

Most people are busy at work and it is hard to meet new friends with similar interests. Signing up for a dance class is a great way to do this. Students often exchange phone numbers, form WhatsApp groups and support each other on and off the dance floor. Who couldn’t use more friends? Sometimes these friendships even blossoms into relationships. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing students meet on the dance floor and then date, get married, and have kids. That shouldn’t be your expectation (that’s a lot of matchmaking pressure on me!) but hey if it happens, what a great added benefit.

Different Experiences

Individuals rotate partners about every five minutes so you practice dancing with lots of different people. This is important because when you go out social dancing you are often dancing with 10, 20, 30 or more different partners throughout the night and you will already be experienced in dancing with lots of different people.

If you are reading this and already in a relationship or have a partner to dance with then you get to experience similar benefits – meeting new people, always having someone to dance with and seeing different energies on the dance floor and learning from those experiences.

But dancing for singles is a fun, healthy habit that you can do at least once a week. There are many physical, mental and social benefits in taking a dance class. I signed up in 2009 and haven’t looked back. It is just so beautiful. Check out our classes and sign up because at Toronto Dance Salsa if you’re single you #belong.
