Bachata definitely is easier, but it’s just the way that it works, which is having four beats instead of Salsa which has eight.

Bachata is the sexy one. Even though the count is up to eight, it is considered a four-beat dance. Bachata is way more forgiving if you make a mistake in the beat or you misstep because you can fix it pretty quickly if you missed the beat. Salsa is the more forward and backward. With Salsa, it takes a little bit more skill.

The thing to consider isn’t necessarily thinking the easiest one. It’s the one that’s gonna serve you more long-term. Salsa is the dance that you’ll find in most Latin clubs and in most salsa places. Toronto has the great fortune of having every night of the week that you can go and find a place to dance salsa after salsa.

Bachata is the next popular one in most cities. So if you learn Salsa first, the benefit there is if you ever travel, Salsa is the go-to one that you’re definitely going to hear. Bachata is the romantic one, it is the dance of the heart. It’s more passionate and it’s beautiful.

If you’re really nervous or you’re extremely self-conscious and maybe you’ve tried Salsa dancing and feel like it’s just too difficult. Then, I always suggest to my students to do the Bachata. Bachata is amazing and there’s nothing rewarding than seeing my students in level one Bachata being able to do dips.

In level one, we teach dips in Bachata while in Salsa we have to wait up to level four and five to do dips. So learning curve is faster with Bachata.
