Zumba Toronto: Why Salsa is Better

I want to make it very clear that if you’re looking for a Zumba class in Toronto because you want to be more active, that’s a great option. There are many benefits to Zumba and by no means is this me trying to bring down or turn people away. But Zumba, in my opinion, has a bunch of things missing that you can only have in Salsa. Below are three reasons why taking Salsa classes in Toronto is better than taking Zumba classes.

Dancing with Others.

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. Through this pandemic and just through life, it is hard to find people to hang out and bond with. But when you’re actually dancing with others, this is not only a chance to be more active, but also a chance to make new connections and friendships. The reality is when you go to a party it’s fun to jam out on your own. But what’s more fun is to grab a partner and dance with them. When you’re having fun you’re always saying “weeee” as a little kid. You’re never saying “I.” Everything is more fun with others. Learning to spin and dance and flow and vibe with others is just a blast. Zumba has similar moves but everything is solo.  You don’t get the “we” in Zumba.

Going to Nightclubs

Unlike Zumba, with Salsa, you can travel anywhere in the world, go into a Latin nightclub, grab a partner and start to dance. It’s incredible! What I love about Salsa is it’s such a practical dance. Russia, Korea, Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa, any place you can name, has a Salsa nightclub. There are so many places to dance. You can find a nightclub anywhere and vibe and have fun and dance for hours.

Friendships

I have lost count of the number of times I’ve seen my students create WhatsApp groups, and create bonding experiences. They get together to grab food and drinks and then go out and dance together and laugh. When you hold hands with another human being, you can’t help but build connections. You ebb and flow as you’re dancing, and you vibe with them. Next thing you know, you are exchanging phone numbers, Instagrams etc and you’re hanging out outside of class. Not that this can’t happen in a Zumba class. But Salsa has a physical connection that allows you to get more comfortable and it is easier to cross those barriers. In Zumba you’re standing by yourself, in your own personal bubble. You’re following an instructor and doing the choreography, but then it is up to you to take the initiative and strike up a conversation. In Salsa you have the physical connection and have already spoken while dancing and it is easier.

Bonus: Come out of Your Comfort Zone

Salsa classes are the best way to come out of your comfort zone. It is the best way to connect with others and to discover that you’re braver, sexier and bolder than you thought. I’m an extrovert but when I started my Salsa journey, I was incredibly shy and worried about what people would think. When I joined this school that I now run, everybody was so warm and welcoming that I soon got over my shyness. This is one of the things I love about Salsa. When you’re dancing with a partner, you can’t help but come out of your comfort zone because you’re working with someone towards a shared goal –  get this move down and flow. If you’re shy or an introvert, Salsa is one of the best ways to come out of your comfort zone in a safe way.
