If you want to feel confident start dancing Salsa.
I was not a confident person. I had a lot of body image issues. I was overweight insecure to hold a girl’s hand, awkward in every single way. I didn’t know I was starving for Salsa until I first tasted it during my Salsa Level 1 class at this very school that I now run.
It’s one of the few things I’ve experienced in life, where anyone can pick it up, it takes forever to master, yet at the same time, it’s one of the most fun, social activities, you can do.
The most translatable hobby, that can make you a better person at work, in your relationships.
It’s not even about being the best. It’s being the best version of yourself. Because when you show up on a Salsa dance floor, in any part of the world, you don’t need to speak the language, you just ask a partner to dance and you move and you groove.
There’s nothing like confidence in self as you show up in the four to five minutes of a song and you just give it your all. Every song is a chance to connect, to get better, to have more fun, and to feel more confident in yourself. The exhilaration of seeing the person in front of you, smile at that connection, you get to have the flow, you get to experience all that…is just incredible.
When I took my first dance class, it was hard and I was the worst dancer. But what I fell in love with was the growth. The “Hey, if I put more effort into it, I can get better even if I’m not talented.” That’s where confidence comes from.
Confidence is earned through doing difficult things. Salsa is challenging but it’s also fun because Salsa music is so energetic and playful. I can’t really think of anything else where you can just obsess about it in a fun playful environment, meet new people, be physically active and learn to feel good in your own body.
Confidence through competence. When you are good at something, it gives you calmness when there is a storm happening in life.
I had many storms in my life and there was nothing like letting all of that go when I stepped on the dance floor and danced my heart away.
It was the best decision I have ever made, taking my first Salsa Level 1 class.
