Salsa Dance – 3 Reasons to take Salsa

I started taking Salsa dance classes in 2009 and it’s been the best decision of my life. Nothing has had a bigger impact on my emotional health, on my physical health, and my spiritual health. The dance moves and tricks that I’ve learned are amazing but they are not nearly as significant as the whole body health benefits I’ve experienced. So here are the 3 reasons why taking a Salsa dance class will change your life.

Physical Benefits of Salsa

In a one-hour class, you are taking an average of 1500 to 2000 steps. As you take your first Salsa dance steps, your step count definitely goes up. If you go out social dancing, you will work up a sweat. So there are obvious physical benefits. There are also many studies that show the physical and mental benefits of Salsa dance classes. Studies show that Salsa dance classes improve working memory in older adults. The results are comparable to reading or practicing other sports like swimming.

You also have to be fully present when Salsa dancing. Followers have to pay attention to the leaders and leaders have to create the dance. Both leaders and followers must adjust to every new partner. So your brain is constantly firing. Your neurons are firing and new neural connections are being made. Your heart rate goes up. You’re smiling more. There are a million physical benefits to taking Salsa dance classes.

Emotional Benefits of Salsa

The times when I am not growing and learning are some of the unhappiest moments of my life.  And I’m proud to say, 12 years later after starting my Latin Dance journey, I’m still learning and growing as a Salsa dancer. This is the exciting thing. There is no peak in dance. There’s always someone new to meet on the dance floor, new moves to learn and new connections to create. You can also learn different styles of Salsa – LA, New York, Cuban. The world of Salsa is massive.

This massive Salsa community is also a positive community. I’ve met the kindest and warmest people on the dance floor. If you feel lonely, you can go to a dance class and meet some great human beings that you can connect with, and friendships will happen. There’s this amazing feeling when Salsa music comes on and you start dancing and you’re smiling and vibing in a beautiful way. It’s hard to explain until you take your first class, so definitely sign up.

Spiritual Benefits of Salsa

I’ll be honest, this  last part is a little bit uncomfortable for me to talk about because I’ve never really considered myself a spiritual person. But If I define spirituality as a connection to something greater, then definitely Salsa has opened my heart. I’ve traveled to so many parts of the world. Places where I don’t even speak the language. And yet, when I walk into a Salsa club, I already feel connected to the community.

I think we are always hungry for a sense of community and Salsa has provided that for me. Finding this community has also helped me discover my mission in life, which is that every human being feels like they #belong. This mission is such a part of me that #belong is tattooed on my wrist and printed on the back of my instructor shirts.

So whether you are searching for a  physical, emotional or spiritual reset, you #belong on the dance floor.
