Latin Dancing for Seniors

Latin Dancing is great for Seniors. I have had students of all ages walk into my studio. There are teenagers to those over 75. Age is just a number for them and me. If you want something, age should not make a difference. So if you are reading this article, you are probably an energetic spirit in need of guidance on Latin Dancing for Seniors. Read on for some tips.

Take Care of Your Knees

People of any age can have knee problems, but if you are a Senior who has knee problems then pick Salsa. Salsa is a better option than Bachata because it focuses on moving forward and back. Bachata focuses on parallel movements, which can be harder on your knees. Salsa is like fast walking. Consequently, if you have knee problems, Salsa is the way to go.

Avoid Dizziness and Improve Coordination.

If you are prone to dizziness and have coordination problems, Bachata is the best choice. In general, Bachata is a great way to start Latin dancing for many reasons. Bachata is a low-impact dance. Moreover, coordination is a lot easier in Bachata. You do fewer spins, and the spins are slower than Salsa. Bachata has a shorter learning curve than Salsa and is a lot more kind to students who are brand new and starting their Latin Dance journey, including Seniors.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t start with Salsa. One of my favourite students has been with me for over two and a half years. She’s in her 70s, and she started with Salsa. She had a great experience. But then she began Bachata at my suggestion, and she loves it. She feels way more confident.

Keep Moving and Enjoy Every Moment on the Dance Floor

The most important thing is just deciding to move more. We all know the health benefits of exercise. There is evidence that dancing can slow the progression of things like Alzheimer’s Disease because your brain is continually learning and making new connections.

Latin Dancing is also a great way to form connections. Unlike many sports, performance is not the goal. On the contrary, you set your pace because what matters is enjoying the moment and connecting with your dance partner.

Seniors can do any activity from cycling to swimming, but I invite you to start Latin Dancing. Salsa and Bachata are excellent gateways for improving your physical and mental health. You also benefit from something intangible as it soothes your spirit. You can read more about the Health Benefits of Dance by clicking on the link. When you become part of the dance world, you become part of a community that loves celebrating life. I hope at some point, whatever your age is, you walk into the studio and we have the opportunity to dance together.
