Latin Dance with Lots of Hip Movement

Which Latin dance has lots of hip movement? The truth is every Latin dance has hip movement. It looks beautiful. We’ve all seen the YouTube videos or even people on a dance floor. The dancers have that swing of the hips and you want to be able to dance like that! So which Latin Dance should you choose? There are two styles with more accentuated hip movements, and each is awesome.

Bachata

It’s well known for hip movements, especially as it has evolved into Sensual Bachata. Just by listening to the name… “Sensual Bachata” Oh my gosh, those hips don’t lie. Shakira, Shakira! And the coolest part is both leaders and followers have to learn to do the hip movement. In our advanced Bachata classes, we focus a lot more on hip movement. Students already know their basics and are more confident in moving their bodies when they dance. I see my students flowing and moving their hips in that figure eight or infinity sign. It looks incredible! So definitely, if you want to learn how to use your hips, Bachata is the key to understanding sexy, incredible, beautiful hip movement.

Kizomba

Those YouTube videos you watched? If it wasn’t Bachata dancers with the incredible hip movements it was probably Kizomba. Kizomba is an Afro-Cuban style of dance. We don’t offer Kizomba classes at this time in our school. Still, we used to teach it, and it is a beautiful dance because like Bachata,  Kizomba focuses on ground movement where you are pressing the balls of your feet into the ground. That deep weight transfer creates pronounced hip movement that is very sensual.

The only thing I will say about Kizomba is the focus is on the followers and not on the leaders. Think of Kizomba as if Bachata and Tango had a child. That’s Kizomba. Now, I’m not saying that’s the historical background. It’s more a creative take on a beautiful dance and something you should learn at some point.

So remember that every style of Latin dance focuses on hip movement. As a dance instructor, I prefer to teach my students practical Latin dances such as Bachata, Merengue or Salsa because these dance styles have a large community. You can go to a city anywhere in the world and they will be dancing Bachata, Merengue and Salsa.

Other than that, just dance. Pick a rhythm and style that feels right for you and enjoy it because dance is a transformative experience for your body, mind, and soul.
