How to Dance Advanced Salsa

There are many tips I can share with you on how to dance advanced in Salsa but ultimately, it will always come down to grinding it out with more advanced dancers. Surrounding yourself with a higher calibre of teachers and learning BACHATA…yes I said it!

To Dance Advanced Salsa You Must Learn Bachata

This seems like a weird tip but it did wonders for me. I always felt Bachata was too slow for me. Bachata relies much more on musicality, which wasn’t my strength. But I worked hard and my musicality improved. And that started to change my mindset about Salsa. I started to bring my musicality from Bachata into Salsa and wow did it make a difference! So to dance advanced Salsa take the best from all the different styles, especially Bachata. Don’t get stuck in one style.

Go to Conventions to Dance Advanced Salsa

Conventions are where the best dancers from around the province, country, and sometimes the world gather. There are workshops for advanced, intermediate and beginner dancers taught by international professionals. By dancing non-stop for three days and being exposed to some of the best dancers in the world, your dancing will improve. It’s like a training ground for pro athletes! Whether local (Canada Salsa Congress, held in Toronto), provincial (Montreal Salsa Convention) or international (United States, European, and Asian Conventions)…Conventions need to become a staple of your growth.

Invest in Private Lessons

How does a professional dancer get better in Salsa? Easy, by doing private lessons. It’s the difference between hiring a personal trainer for fitness and taking a group fitness class. You are going to get more feedback and instruction from a personal trainer. So, you need to find an amazing dancer (who can also teach the material) and do private lessons. Because to dance Salsa at an advanced level, you need to learn from the best and get personalized feedback.

Whether you want to become an advanced, or even professional Salsa dancer or simply improve, the best advice I can give you is to keep dancing. You will meet many great people in the Salsa community and you are out having fun, so you can’t lose.
