Salsa can be hard if you don’t have the right environment.
If you have a great instructor and a supportive environment, then it won’t be a problem.
I started as a Salsa Level 1 student at Toronto Dance Salsa in 2009. I was always the guy who would avoid the dance floor at a wedding, at a Halloween party, at a club (that I would get dragged into).
You would find me by the bar having a drink…feeling embarrassed that I had no rhythm.
So when I started in 2009 as a Salsa student, it was hard for me because I did something I felt uncomfortable with, no background in…I was insecure. I never took dance classes and yet the way that we teach salsa at Toronto Dance Salsa, the school made it simple for me to learn.
Our motto is “Even if you have two left feet you can learn to dance”
We show that anyone can learn proven by the fact that I originally want to be a marriage counselor when I first started taking dance classes. Then when I became a volunteer (at the school), I changed career paths and I started to pursue being a police officer.
A couple of years later, I decided to take over this dance school because I found where I #belong.
Anything worth having is hard and Salsa is one of those skills that is worth having. I can’t tell you how much it impacted my confidence in positive ways. How I carry myself with my head held high now, my physical health, my mental health has just been incredible.
Salsa will be hard if you do drop-in lessons. At our school, we don’t do drop-ins. We found that if you come in on a weekly basis, once a week, and you build on the previous week, it gives you enough room that you can feel confident and see, wins week by week without feeling overwhelmed.
When you sign up for a Salsa Nightclub level 1 class or even Bachata you come in for a nine-week session. Sometimes there are condensed for six weeks but usually nine weeks.
Once a week you can in with the same classmates, the same instructor and we give you the building blocks, little by little so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
If you’re just passionate about having more friends in your life, if you’re passionate about having more fun, then Salsa is the thing that you definitely need to start. Yes, it will be a little bit challenging.
Yes, you have to come out of your comfort zone, but all of that is worth it.
Have you truly ever really enjoyed something that came too easy? No, of course not!
The exciting thing is climbing a mountain and learning to get good at something. I believe in the right environment, confidence comes from competence.
Salsa gave me confidence, it gave me purpose and it gave me a family.
I can’t wait to welcome you to our big family, have you coming in a week to week, having fun, connecting with new friends, and letting lose to amazing Latin songs. Click here to check our current schedule.
