What to wear for Salsa Dancing.
As a rule,I would say wear whatever makes you feel confident and lets you express yourself. You can wear a cocktail dress, or you can wear a bathrobe. Whatever makes you feel great. But here’s a breakdown of what you should wear and what you should keep in mind for various venues.
- Classes
Wear super comfortable clothing for classes – especially beginner classes. Men will tend to wear jeans or shorts and a t-shirt. Women will often wear jeans or leggings or light pants with a t-shirt or crop top. There is no need to worry about heels or special dance shoes for men or women in beginner levels. Wear well-fitting shoes so you don’t turn your ankles but sneakers or flats are fine. Wear light clothing. You don’t want to wear something that is tight or restrictive. Above all put comfort and how you feel about yourself first. Fashion is a distant second.
- Socials
You can wear the same clothing to socials or parties that are run by a school or an event provider as you would for classes. Comfort and practicality are key. One quick tip is that you probably want something that will wick the sweat away – clothes you would wear to the gym or yoga studio. Socials are crowded with anywhere from 80 – 200 people, so wearing something that will feel light and dries easily is a good idea. Another suggestion for socials is to bring an extra shirt so you can stay fresh and dry – dancing in a damp shirt isn’t very comfortable. I naturally tend to sweat a little bit more than others and I wish I was given that advice.
- Latin clubs
At Latin nightclubs, people do tend to dress up a bit more. I went to a Latin nightclub in LA wearing a t-shirt, jeans and a hat. Everyone else was wearing suits and dresses and this really shocked me. In fact, they wouldn’t even let me wear my hat. The culture for each club and in each city are slightly different, but in general people dress up more. Followers will wear heels and often dresses or skirts and leaders will wear nice pants or jeans and a dressier shirt. But even if you do wear fancier clothes, you should still wear things that make you feel great.
So whether you are going to a class, social or nightclub wear something that makes you feel great about yourself. It doesn’t matter what other people think. Pick what makes you feel confident. I think you always win that way.
