From the bottom of my heart, I think whether you choose Salsa Level 1, Salsa Nightclub Level 1 (which includes a brief introduction to Merengue and Bachata) or Bachata Level 1, you cannot go wrong. Our classes at Toronto Dance Salsa are designed for people who have two left feet – even 3 left feet, or 6 left and right foot combinations. Why? Because our classes are cumulative. So every week at Toronto Dance Salsa we build on the lessons learned the previous week. That means from the very first class we make sure you feel like you #belong on the dance floor. That is important for us because it is an awful feeling when you think all your classmates are leaving you behind and you can’t keep up. So you can’t go wrong when choosing between Salsa Level 1, Salsa Nightclub Level 1 or Bachata Level 1.
I will say that Salsa has a longer learning curve. You will see and feel your progress faster in Bachata. Bachata is rhythmically even – it goes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Salsa has a quick, quick, slow rhythm and is a little more complex. Salsa is also a lot faster.
The best way I can describe it is that Salsa is like driving on a highway and Bachata is like driving on a country road. If you are the type of person who has a tonne of energy and wants to burn off steam – pick Salsa. I love Salsa. That is what I started with. I have been mastering Salsa for the last 12 years. But in the last four years, I have become obsessed with Bachata. Now I teach, dance and love both Salsa and Bachata.
Salsa and Bachata are both beautiful dances. You can’t go wrong. If you are particularly nervous and shy and want to start as easily as possible – pick Bachata. Bachata is soulful, Bachata is the music and the dance of the heart. Whereas Salsa is like a loud party.
Either way, I cannot wait to welcome you to Toronto Dance Salsa with a big, big hug or a high five, whichever you prefer. But let’s be honest, I’m a hugger, so you will get a hug. I love you and I cannot wait to see you on the dance floor.
