💃 Why a Dance Class Is the Perfect Anniversary Gift for Your Partner in Toronto

When it comes to finding a memorable, meaningful anniversary gift, dinner and flowers just don’t cut it anymore.

If you’re looking for a way to reconnect, have fun, and say “thank you for loving me through thick and thin” — there’s one gift that says it all: a dance class.

Whether you’re celebrating your first year together or your 25th, taking your partner to a weekly dance class in Toronto is one of the best ways to grow closer, laugh more, and build new memories that actually last.

Here’s why couples across Toronto are falling in love again on the dance floor:

1. A Weekly Reminder to Slow Down — Together

Life is busy. And it’s easy to get caught up in errands, emails, and Netflix binges.

A weekly dance class becomes your built-in hour to press pause, hold each other, and remember:

“This is my person.”

2. Physical Connection Without the Phones

For one hour, it’s just the two of you — moving together, laughing together, maybe even stepping on each other’s toes a little.

But that’s the beauty of it: real, playful physical connection in a space with no distractions and no screens.

3. Learning a New Skill Rekindles the Spark

Trying something new activates excitement and curiosity — two ingredients every relationship needs to thrive.

Instead of sitting side-by-side at a restaurant, you’re side-by-side learning to spin, smile, and maybe even salsa.

4. It’s a Lifetime Skill You’ll Actually Use

Unlike that massage or dinner reservation, dancing stays with you.

Whether it’s a wedding, a trip to Cuba, or a kitchen dance party — you’ll be glad you both took that first class.

5. It’s a Fun Escape from the Noise

Toronto can be loud. Your life can be louder.

A dance class offers you both a weekly retreat. Music, movement, and shared laughter melt the stress away.

🎁 Bonus: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

This isn’t a one-night thing.

It’s nine weeks of shared moments, goofy memories, and new inside jokes.

It’s your time.

Your story.

Your beat.

🕺 Ready to Surprise Your Partner?

At Toronto Dance Salsa, our beginner classes are designed for couples who want more joy, more play, and more connection.

You don’t need rhythm. You don’t need experience.

Just each other — and a willingness to try something new, together.

❤️ Anniversary idea unlocked.

Salsa Moves

There are so many beautiful Salsa moves. But the best part is that they are all variations on the foundations that every beginner learns. So here are breakdowns of three basic moves that will help you in all levels of Salsa.

The Right Turn

After the basic steps, the move you will use the most is the right turn. For leaders, tap forward with your left foot on count one. About 90% of your weight should remain on the right foot. Twist your torso as far to the right as possible on count two. Both feet should still be on the ground. On count three, suck your ankles together and face your partner again. Continue with your basics by stepping back with your right foot on count five. A follower’s right turn is the same except for the count. Followers tap forward on five, twist on six, suck your ankles together on seven and step back into your basics with your right foot on count one. Think of it as a long twist instead of a turn. If someone calls your name from behind, you twist your torso to face them. That’s what a Salsa right turn should be – a twist. If you want to learn more about this fundamental Salsa move, check out my YouTube video for more tips.

The Left (or Reverse) Turn

You need to be able to turn in the other direction. So left turns or reverse turns are crucial. For leaders, step forward with your left foot on count one. Step in place with your right foot on count two. Take a step back with your left foot and twist to your left to do a half-turn to face the opposite direction (away from your partner) on count three. Still turning to the left, take another step back with your right foot on count five. You will be facing your partner again. From here it is back to basics. Step in place with your left on count six and bring your feet together by stepping with your right on count seven. For followers, the steps are the same but the count is different. Step forward with your left foot on five, step in place on count six, turn to your left a half turn (away from your partner) and step back with your left on count seven. Step back again with your right on count one while still turning to your left to face your partner, step in place on two with your left and bring your feet together by stepping with your right on count three. This Salsa move seems complicated, but remember to keep your feet apart and step away from your partner twice (once to face away and once to face them again) and it will get easier.

Open Breaks

Open breaks look beautiful and professional on the dance floor. You and your partner open yourselves up to the dance floor as if to say “Look at me!” and it looks incredible. Leaders need to prep their partner on count seven by letting go of your left hand and tossing your partner’s hand behind them. Leaders step with your left foot by placing it behind your right foot and twisting away from your partner on count one. Step in place with your right foot on count two and face your partner again by stepping with your left foot on count three. The only tricky part is that as you step on count three, you have to change hands. Let go of your right hand and hold on with your left. Now do the same thing on the other side. While opening your torso to the rest of the dance floor, step back with your right foot behind your left foot on five. Step in place with your left foot on six and face your partner again by stepping with your right foot on six. Rinse and repeat. To get back into your basics, push back on your follower’s palm on count seven and step forward on count one. Followers, you are the mirror image of the leaders so you start with your right foot because the move starts on count one. Open breaks look gorgeous and allow you to gain confidence because you are moving in sync with your partner.

Knowing your basics, right and left turns, and open breaks will be an incredible foundation. These Salsa moves are the basis for almost every other fancy trick you see on the dance floor or in YouTube videos.

Improve Your Salsa Turns

The move followers and leaders do the most are right turns. Although it is a basic move, the better you execute right turns, the more confident you’ll feel. So here are three simple things you can do to improve your Salsa turns.

Turn with Your Core

I was confused by this advice when I started dancing. More simply, it means to turn with your belly button. So your torso is twisting and leading the turn. To practice the twist, tap forward with your left and then use your belly button to twist your torso to the right as you look over your right shoulder. Keep twisting as far as possible, then bring your ankles together to finish the turn. Think of it as if someone is calling your name from behind you. You would automatically twist your body and then your feet follow. The same thing should happen in Salsa. Turn with your core first and you will improve your Salsa turn.

Keep Your Heels Off the Ground

Many Salsa dancers put their weight on their toes when doing a turn. Your weight should be on the ball of your foot – behind your big toe. The easiest way to practice this is to ensure your knees are bent and your butt is back. You can think of it as a T-Rex position or imagine you are leaning your butt on a bar stool. Now lift your heels off the ground just a little. You only need a millimetre or two. This position keeps you more grounded and prevents you from falling forward. Now you have two ways to improve your Salsa turns – turn with your core and keep your heels off the ground.

Suck in Your Ankles

Many Salsa dancers finish their right turns looking like compasses used in geometry class to draw circles. To help us draw circles, the end with the needle stayed firm and the pencil end swung around. Similarly, many people finish a Salsa turn with their feet apart. But you will be steadier and have more power if you keep your ankles together. Imagine you are wearing a skirt or a kilt. You don’t want everybody to see what’s underneath as you turn. So suck your ankles together. This will improve your Salsa turns immensely.

The Great Plate Escape: How Vitamin C (Connection) Turned My World Right Side Up

Life, my friends, is a rollercoaster. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down, and sometimes you’re hanging upside down, wondering how the heck you got there. Let me whisk you away on a wild ride of my own, where the loops were many, the drops were steep, and a plate became my unlikely savior.

Growing up, my mom was the North Star in my universe. “Just focus on school, kiddo,” she’d say, her eyes twinkling with dreams of my bright future. “Get into York University, and the world’s your oyster!” With her sacrifices as my backdrop, I had one mission: make her proud. Simple, right? Well, not quite.

Enter the curveball. On a seemingly ordinary day, as I was gearing up for another shift at my job, Mom handed me a letter. “Something from York,” she mentioned casually. My heart raced. This was it! The golden ticket to my future. But as I tore open the envelope, the words hit me like a ton of bricks: “Application Denied.” It felt like the universe’s cruel joke. Panic surged, emotions spiraled, and my world went topsy-turvy.

In a haze of disbelief, I approached my boss, my voice shaky. “I need to leave. I have to get to York. There’s been a mistake.” But instead of understanding, I was met with a cold ultimatum. “Leave now, and you’re fired.” The weight of the moment pressed down on me. My future at York was hanging by a thread, and now my job was on the line too. But the decision, in that split second, was clear. “Okay,” I muttered, “I’m fired.” And with that, I dashed out, leaving behind the security of my job.

The journey to York was a blur of frantic thoughts. “How could this happen? How do I tell Mom? And wait, did I just lose my job over a maybe?” The corridors of York echoed with my desperation as I sought answers, but every door I knocked on remained firmly shut. The finality of it all began to sink in. I hadn’t made the cut, and there was no plan B.

The bus ride back home was a slow descent into despair. Every honk, every stop, every jolt was a stark reminder of my double failure. The weight of letting down my mom, who had given up so much for my dreams, was crushing. How could I face her?

Walking into our home, the familiar sound of my mom chopping vegetables in the kitchen reached my ears. But instead of comfort, it only amplified my dread. “How was your day?” she called out. The dam of emotions broke. Tears streamed down, and words tumbled out in a jumbled mess of apologies and regrets.

But here’s where the story takes a twist. Instead of the expected lecture or disappointment, Mom did something utterly unexpected. She handed me her favorite plate. “Go on,” she urged, “throw it against the wall.” My mind raced. Was this a test? A metaphor? Or had the day’s events driven us both to the brink? But seeing her earnest expression, I hurled the plate. The crash was cathartic, releasing a pent-up storm of emotions.

Pulling me into a tight embrace, Mom whispered, “It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.” In that moment, amidst the shattered porcelain, I felt it – the pure, unadulterated power of connection. That was the real “Vitamin C” I needed.

With renewed determination and Mom’s unwavering support, I charted a new course. Night classes, early morning lectures, and sheer grit became my allies. And guess what? Not only did I eventually get into York, but I also soared straight into the honors program for psychology. Take that, universe!

So, here’s the golden nugget from my rollercoaster tale: When life throws you off track, when panic sets in, and the world seems bleak, remember the magic of “Vitamin C” – Connection. It’s the lifeline that pulls you back from the edge, the anchor in stormy seas. And if you ever need a tangible reminder, just find a plate (preferably not a cherished one) and give it a toss. Trust me, it’s therapeutic!

Find Bachata Classes that are Right for You

Where should you take Bachata classes? There are so many things to consider and so many options. So whether it’s with our school or other schools, I want to ensure you have a great time. Here are some tips to help you find Bachata classes that are right for you.

Look for a FRIENDLY environment

Taking your first dance class can be intimidating. Pick a school with a welcoming and friendly environment. You want a school and instructors who will build your confidence. I give my students high fives, hugs, and positive energy to help them overcome their nervousness. To find Bachata classes that are right for you, do your research! Talk to the instructors and review the school’s Instagram channel or website. If you get good vibes, chances are you have found Bachata classes that are right for you.

Look for a FUN environment

Most students take Bachata classes to put more fun in their life. The fun does not come from dance moves but from the energy and vibes of the school culture. Read the Google reviews of the school and see if the word “fun” comes up. When you are having fun, learning is easier. Find a school that focuses on fun, and you will have found Bachata classes that are right for you.

Look for CONSISTENT classes

It’s hard to learn anything if you are doing drop-in classes because there is no curriculum. Imagine taking a math class (I had the hardest time with MATH) but you are doing it as drop-in lessons. So you will come in, sometimes chapter 1, then chapter 5, then 2…you will feel overwhelmed. If you come in consistently for a course you won’t feel overwhelmed. Consistency also allows you to connect with your classmates and the greater Bachata community.

Ultimately, finding Bachata classes that are right for you means you find a school where you feel comfortable and welcomed. If you are interested in Salsa, then here are some Things to Know Before You Take Salsa Classes.

Big Decisions, Bigger Heartbeats: A Dance with Destiny

Ah, the age-old conundrum: to follow the heart or the head? It’s like choosing between a chocolate lava cake and a sensible salad. Both have their merits, but one is undeniably more exciting.

Flashback to a pivotal moment in my life. Picture this: I was on the brink of making a massive career shift. From the bustling world of sales, where I was raking in a cool $56,000 a year (a significant jump from my $22,000 security guard days), to the rhythmic beats of a dance school. Now, I wasn’t just grooving to the music in my living room; I was contemplating taking over the entire dance school. Yep, the whole shebang!

But here’s the twist: I was good at sales. Like, really good. Plus, life was throwing all sorts of grown-up responsibilities my way. Moving in with my girlfriend, possibly popping the big question, and the ever-looming need to save money. Everything was seemingly falling into place.

Then, out of the blue, the dance school owner waltzed into my life with an offer. An administrative role. But the paycheck? Let’s just say it was more of a two-step back than a cha-cha forward. My immediate reaction? A resounding “No!” I mean, I had bills to pay and dreams of romantic proposals under the stars.

But life, as it often does, had other plans. My mentor, the very person who taught me the art of dance, invited me for a late-night walk. Under the starry sky, he dropped a bombshell: “How about becoming the director of the dance school?” My jaw hit the floor. But the pay? Still a tango with my finances.

Three nights, three walks, and countless back-and-forths later, he made an offer I couldn’t refuse. Not just a piece of the pie, but the entire dance school! It was like being handed the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. But, in true dramatic fashion, I hesitated. The risk was enormous. Was I ready to bet it all on a dream?

He posed a simple question, “What does your heart say?” My head was screaming practicalities, but my heart? It was doing the samba, urging me to leap into the unknown.

Fast forward nine years, and here I am, living my dream. Not only running a dance school but also dreaming of opening more locations. All because I chose to listen to my heart over my head.

The moral of this jive? In life, when faced with monumental decisions, let your heart lead the way. It might sound like a risky waltz, but it’s the small, heart-led choices that make the most significant impact. So, whether you’re contemplating a career change, a leap of faith, or just deciding between that chocolate lava cake and salad, remember: big decisions with your heart, small ones with your head. Because, at the end of the day, the most profound regrets stem from not dancing to the beat of your heart.

Enhance Your Health With Salsa Dancing

Recent research has shown the profound positive impact that Salsa classes and Salsa dancing have on overall health. Beyond the evident physical advantages of keeping you active, Salsa also has a remarkable influence on mental health. Here are three ways to enhance your well-being with Salsa dancing.

Community

Salsa classes give you a sense of connection and community. Salsa helped me feel less alone in the world. I joined Salsa dance classes to feel confident, but I stayed for the community, the connection, the friends and the relationships. One of the best cures for the blues is having healthy connections in your life. There’s something to be said when you come into a dance class and you have people physically around you. You have physical contact with a partner and the people are supportive and the music is fabulous. In that environment, you cannot help but make connections and friendships. I’m always excited and looking forward to stepping on the dance floor because I know my people are there. Becoming part of a positive community is just one way to enhance your health with Salsa dancing.

Physical Benefits

Many people do not like working out. Gyms can be intimidating and working out can be isolating. Many people start exercise programs and then give up out of frustration, loneliness and boredom. Salsa dancing is different. When I started to dance more, I wanted to be physically lighter. I wanted to be quicker because Salsa is all about speed. And the simple fact is that you burn a lot of calories, and you do a lot of steps when you’re dancing. And here’s the best part because you’re connecting to really positive people and you’re having fun, you come out with a massive smile on top of a slightly slimmer waist.

Mental Health

I didn’t realize until years later that the biggest wins weren’t just the physical benefits and the community but the combination of the two which improved my mental health. As you dance more and grow and improve, you gain confidence. It’s incredible! You continue to learn and grow and challenge yourself by learning new moves and dancing with new partners. This also improves your memory and concentration. Research shows that dance is beneficial for memory and may even slow the progress of dementia in older adults. It is incredible, rewarding, enriching and challenging. It can also help you release your anxieties and frustrations. When I feel overwhelmed with life or frustrated, I can go out Salsa dancing and physically release that energy. Camaraderie, improved memory and releasing frustrations are obvious ways to enhance your health with Salsa dancing.

The challenge, the connection and the physical movement combine to make me feel more balanced in the world. Isn’t that what we all want in life? Gaining a community, increased physical fitness and a boost in mental health are three powerful ways that you can enhance your health with Salsa dancing.

If you are still not convinced that Salsa classes are right for you, read Three Reasons to Take Salsa Dance Classes to discover even more benefits of Salsa.

Elevator Games and the Labels We Wear (or Don’t)

Let me spill the beans on a quirky little game I play in elevators and how it led me to challenge a label I didn’t even know I wore.

Spoiler alert: It involves a fist bump, a teenager, and a whole lot of overthinking!

So, flashback to a year ago. Picture me, the life-of-the-party dance school owner, sitting in a psychiatrist’s office. Why? ADHD stuff. But then, out of the blue, he drops this bombshell: “You might have social anxiety.” Say what now? Me? The guy who can salsa his way through any crowd? It felt like being told I’m a cat when I’ve been barking all my life.

Fast forward to a seemingly ordinary Sunday. I’m in an elevator, and I hit the button for the 10th floor. A couple and a teenager join the ride. Now, here’s where it gets fun: I have this silent, totally-not-competitive game where I hope people press a floor above mine. It’s like a mini victory lap in my head when I exit first. But alas, I was set to be third out. Bummer, right?

I chuckled at the irony, and realized they heard the laugh…but did not know the context. I saw the couple shift a little further away from me in discomfort.

Now, most people might’ve just smiled and looked away…or just looked down at their feet until their floor.

But nope, not me! I decided to dive headfirst into the sea of awkwardness. “Hey, ever play the elevator game?” I blurted out, explaining my silly little ritual. And guess what? They laughed! We shared a giggle, and as the couple left on the 3rd floor, I gave them a playful salute, “Good job guys!”

But the real challenge was yet to come. The teenager. I felt this urge to give him a fist bump. But oh boy, the what-ifs started flooding in. What if he leaves me hanging? Do teenagers even do fist bumps anymore? But hey, I’m the guy challenging labels, right? So, I went for it. “Hey, buddy! You totally won this round!” I said, extending my fist. After a suspense-filled moment, he bumped it back with a grin, “Thanks, dude!”

Stepping out on the 10th floor, I felt like I’d just won the Olympics of social interactions. Who knew an elevator ride could be such an adventure?

Life Lesson: We all wear labels, some self-stitched and others handed to us. But here’s the fun part: we get to decide if they fit. So, whether you’re dancing through life or playing silly elevator games, remember to challenge those labels and embrace the playful moments. After all, life’s too short not to fist-bump a stranger!

Ah, family! The ones who’ve seen us at our best, our worst, and every awkward phase in between. Speaking of family, let me tell you about my big bro. He’s nine years my senior and has always been my knight in shining armor. From shielding me from bullies to teaching me the coolest tricks, he’s been my go-to guy. But, as time went on, I felt like we were drifting apart. Or maybe, just maybe, we never truly understood each other.

Recently, I made it a mission to reconnect. Every phone call, no matter how trivial or heated, ended with me saying, “I love you, man.” And every time, his response was a casual, “Okay, cool” or “Talk to you later.” It was like trying to get a cat to jump into a bath – nearly impossible and slightly frustrating.

I had this whole heart-to-heart planned out, you know? A conversation sprinkled with emotional intelligence and understanding. But when the moment came, what blurted out was more akin to, “Dude, why don’t you say you love me back?” Yep, not my finest moment.

His response? “Why do I need to say it? I show it.” And boy, did that spark a massive argument. Yelling, and cursing ensued that was only broken by our mom getting involved. The car ride ended in silence, punctuated only by the sound of the car door slamming.

But here’s the twist. A week later, he called, checking in on me, and offering help in his own way. And it hit me – he was showing love in his language, not mine. If you’ve ever come across the concept of the five love languages, you’ll know they include acts of service, quality time, gifts, physical touch, and words of affirmation. For me, words matter. But for him? It’s all about actions.

I’d been so fixated on hearing those three words that I’d missed all the ways he was showing his love. It’s like waiting for a text when someone’s been sending you handwritten letters all along.

So, here’s the nugget of wisdom I took away: Love isn’t about hearing it the way we want but recognizing it in the ways it’s given. If you ever feel starved for affection, maybe it’s time to look beyond your own love language and appreciate the myriad ways people show they care. After all, love is multifaceted, and sometimes, actions truly speak louder than words.
