I felt lonely my whole life since I was little, I felt like an outsider looking in and even though I had friends and people to hang out with, I never quite felt like I belong.

Especially when the pandemic hit and our school had to shut down, I felt so frustrated and powerless because all over the news, they said, social distancing is what we need to do. Instead of calling it physical distance, they called it social distancing. I just saw so many people in my life, just lock themselves away. I was just sad because our studio was always a place where people can come and not feel lonely.

That’s what I built. I built this dance school up from the idea that the world’s biggest problem is loneliness and it’s so basic too and it’s normal to feel that way. There’s nothing wrong with you or me if we feel lonely. But what I’ve learned over the years is, when I surround myself in the right environment, I don’t have to feel that.

Welcomed With Open Arms

I’ve had many moments where I’ve been surrounded by dozens and hundreds of people who love me and I wasn’t ‘alone’, and still felt lonely. What I learned was the first step to not feeling lonely, is being part of a group of people that welcome you with open arms.

So when I started teaching at the school I would always wait by the entrance as students would come in and I would hug them. I’d say “Hi, Happy Monday” (Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.). Because before they even walked in, I want them to feel that they were welcome.

We all want to feel like we belong in a tribe, welcomed by a tribe.

As students would arrive, from Level 1 (beginner) all the way to Level 6, people who didn’t feel like they could dance, didn’t feel like they could move or coordinate, would already be smiling. Something so basic but most people don’t put effort into, welcome and open energy.

Seek to Understand

I made sure to also understand all of them individually one by one because that’s what I wanted.

I felt lonely not because people didn’t agree with me, I felt lonely because people didn’t take the time to understand me, to see me.

It’s so common that as you isolate yourself, as I isolated myself, you feel like there’s no one in your life. I had to learn that. If I sit around nothing changes, I have to go and do something and be part of something where connection and belonging are built into it.

And so, when our school closed down, and I started to do virtual classes for free, and so many other things, I started to feel like, “oh, I’m not alone” and, “oh, I’m not lonely” because I’m going out and I’m creating a space for other people like me who feel lonely that we can all connect.

Honest Validation

The last part of belonging for me that I needed most is validation. Not just “Hey Aleks, that’s a really good job” but recognized for the unique person that I am. I think deep down when we’re part of a tribe, we want to feel like the space that we take up has a use to the group.

It’s so unconscious but that need that we are needed, cared for in the group.

When I teach a Salsa or Bachata, or whatever else I’m teaching, I make sure to walk around and complement specifically each person in their unique way, recognize them, recognize their effort.

Say: “Hey David, I remember you were struggling with this last week, or earlier in class, man I am so proud of how you are growing” I mean wow right? I needed that so badly in my life.

I believe in my heart that for every student that shows up at my studio, that’s one less lonely person out in the world.

That’s my mission. I’d like to cure loneliness and so dance is a tool for that because when you start to dance and now you’re dancing in a positive environment where people accept you and they cheer you on, you feel like you’re part of this massive tribe where you’re growing and connecting and making you friends and feeling loved and loving others.

When you’re in that space, you don’t feel lonely because you know, you belong, in a that values YOU, a tribe that needs you.

I still have my moments when I feel lonely.

It’s not like I’ve suddenly cured it but compared to when I was 13 or 18 or even 3-4 years ago, I feel a lot less lonely As a continue to surround myself with positive people with people who accept me with open hands and arms and people who work to understand me and how I see the world and acknowledge me, It’s so basic…but that’s what we all really want.

I know that everyone is starving for it especially now during the pandemic. So If you’re reading this and you’ve read this up to this point, thank you so much and I want to say to you, if you’re living in Toronto then come join the studio because you won’t feel lonely there.

My mission is that every human being on this planet doesn’t feel lonely.

The way I’ll do that is through love and belonging

If you’re living in another city in another country, the good news is there are dance classes in every part of the world. Honestly, dance is a tool, just pick something that lights you up and has a community built-in. It could be rock climbing, taking pictures in nature with others…

Whatever you do surround yourself in an environment where people are cheering you on and making, you feel important, part of a culture where you matter where your efforts are taken into account, and they matter.

Where you will feel like you belong.

Summertime is my most favourite season for Salsa dancing! Whether you’re spinning at a sweltering club or open-breaking somewhere outdoors; it just feels like you’re somewhere exotic. I’ve decided to list a few of the great summer dancing events that you can go to truly feel like you’re living the music!

Sidewalk Salsa
Every Thursday from 730-930p.m. Break out your clave and burn the pavement at the corner of Bloor and Spadina! Nothing
beats dancing outdoors with the great people who never miss this event!

Salsa on St. Clair
While this event just passed us by; it’s one of the best! Bands, schools and dancers put on one of the most fun Salsa street parties in the world!

The Beaches Jazz Fest
Get a tan and dance the weekend away! A dedicated Latin stage means the Salsa, Merengue and Bachata will accompany you while you get that perfect tan!

Wasaga Beach Party
A somewhat more informal party, people usually put together a great beach b.b.q. and dancing on one of the nicest beaches in Ontario. Think bikinis and bachata! Woot!

VIP Thursdays
Check out our very own, D.J. Duck and Romantico as they heat up the newest Salsa hotspot on Thursday nights.

Lula Lounge
One of the greatest clubs to see live bands from across the globe! When you walk in, you’ll swear you’re in Cuba and when you hit the floor, you’ll know it!

Acrobat Fridays & Tds Saturdays
A serious dancers’ favourite, Friday nights feature performances, instruction from many teachers and just amazing dancers. Come dance on the special Saturdays when Tds hosts their outing as it’s more relaxed, but still really fun!

Plaza and El Rancho
Two of my fav places year-round as the music is a great mix (even playing Reggaeton) and the people come out to just have fun. Be sure to check out the special Brazilian nights as you can dance Samba, Zouk and Lambada (that’s the forbidden dance!)

Babaluus
A Toronto standard in the heart of Yorkville. Great dancers and new dancers take to the floor in this more upscale club. Be sure to check out the On2 and Cuban nights.

6 Degrees Salsa Tuesdays
Put on your finest dancing gear as this club features some of the best and dressiest dancers in the city. Be sure to check out their special long weekend salsa parties, with the amazing ‘White Party’ coming soon!

Tds and Dovercourt Sunday Socials
While I’m biased towards the Tds social, both events feature new and advanced dancers having a blast, dancing the weekend away! Whether you missed asking that cutie to dance on the Friday night, be sure to not miss your chance at these Sunday parties!

I love dancing in the summer and whether you’re outside or indoors; be sure to keep dancing as it’ll help you get closer to having that beach-body ready!

Till then,
Stay Shining Salseros!

Well it’s been so long since I posted on my blog but Saturday definitely inspired a blog post. I had so much fun at Acrobat Lounge. Plenty of times I get caught up in answering questions and photo taking and teaching classes that I don’t get to actually dance much. However this past Saturday at Acrobat I danced, danced, danced and it was so much fun!

Thanks to over 200 people who came out to enjoy the evening. Olivier and Elise taught the beginner salsa class and Evan and I taught the intermediate salsa lesson. Ladies, we needed you! There were at least 5 men who could have used a partner so ladies, come early to the outings so you can enjoy the workshop and get to meet some great dance partners.

There were tons of new faces and dancers of all levels. As well, it was great to see some old friends and those who have been out of the salsa scene for a while. Thanks to all my great dances including Rob, Teddy, Bryan and of course Evan and all the new dance partners I met.

Our next outing is the last one of 2010 and it is our TDS Christmas Party at Acrobat on Dec 18th, 2010 at 8:45pm. There will be performances by the TDS Pro Team, the TDS Students Team and the TDS Reggaeton Team. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I received a comment on an old post that I wrote called “Salsa Tips to Keep In Mind”. Here was the question that Mark asked:

“I just have a quick question. The other day I went to a salsa class and the instructor said we shouldn’t use our thumbs when holding onto the woman’s hands. For me I find it easier to create and control the tension if I use my thumbs especially when it comes to dancing with women who lack tension in their arms. I tried not using my thumbs and it feels little awkward. What do you recommend?”

Well Mark here is my answer:

When you close your thumb or palm over the follower’s hands, the follower immediately relaxes their arms and, even subconsciously, thinks that because you have them they don’t need to do anything. The result is a follower with Spaghetti arms who won’t follow quickly and accurately your lead. So you may think that you have more control because you are holding on but in actuality the follower will not respond properly to your lead.

Instead, if you open your thumb and palms and curl your finger tips and try to have your partner create the same tension with only your fingertips, you will force your partner to create resistance in her frame to keep from letting go. The more often your partner lets you go the more she will strengthen her fingertips and create more resistance. So you may feel like it is out of control at first because you are losing your connection but eventually your partner will firm up her fingertips and frame and then you will have a partner who will follow you quickly and accurately.

In other words, it is worth the initial growing pains to get the right tension and frame so that you can move on to become a great intermediate and then advanced leader.

So followers and leaders, make sure you never use thumbs and palms and instead curl your fingertips slightly and pull a little to create consistent tension and resistance.

Hope that helps – happy practicing!

Well it is 2010 and we just began the semester yesterday with our first set of classes and our weekly Sunday Salsa Social.

It was great to get back into the swing of things. I taught 3 sold out classes (level 1, 2 and 3). Everyone was super excited to salsa after a long hiatus and, as usual, we were a little rusty. So I wanted to remind everyone not to worry or stress too much about your first class. It usually takes a week or two to get back into the salsa swing if you have taken some time off so give yourself a break.

Remember that every class begins with a review of last semester so make sure you are on time and ready to review the most important moves of the past level. Keep in mind that even if you can’t remember all the moves, as long as you can execute the main moves, you will be fine and throughout the semester as you learn new moves we will bring back older moves and add to combinations so that you will continuously practice them.

Our Sunday social is more popular then ever. It is so nice to see students coming out weekly and really improving with every practice session. It is such a cozy, comfortable environment and it is very easy to make friends and meet new dance partners. Hope to see you all out practicing this semester and don’t forget that our first outing of 2010 is this Saturday, January 16th at 8:45pm at Acrobat Lounge. See you all there!
