New Belly Dance Beginner Class

What is Belly Dancing?

Belly Dance is a very sensual, fun past time and offers an excellent workout especially for the abdominal area. This ethnic dance which originated in the Middle East has different influences from regions such as Egypt, Africa, Lebanon, Turkey and more. Today it is enjoyed by dancers worldwide and is a popular form of entertainment and exercise as well as a great way to meet new friends and socialize.

Belly Dance has many social, mental and physical health benefits. Belly Dance classes promote better circulation and can reduce blood pressure, assist in joint health and act as a great cardiovascular exercise which burns calories, tones up and strengthens the body and assists with trimming up and getting fit.

The technique of belly dance varies with the type and style but most of the basics involve circular motions that, very similar to salsa body movement, isolate certain body parts such as hips, abs, shoulders, etc. The use of a coin belt or scarf tied around the hips assists with accenting and isolating the hips.

It is a misconception that men do not belly dance. Historically men have been very involved in this dance and we welcome males in our Toronto Belly Dance classes.
Join Laura from Arabesque every Monday or Wednesday from 6-7pm for Belly Dancing for Beginners at Empress.
Mon Oct 26 – Dec 21
Wed Oct 14 – Dec 9

Hi Everyone!

We have just posted an Intro to Dancing Salsa ON 2 workshop on Saturday March 7th from 5:15 – 7:15pm at Empress. Open to those who have finished level 2 or with permission, this workshop is taught by Teddy Olaso from United Salseros and is $35 for students and $30 for helpers.

Here is a description:
This workshop will focus on introducing the proper fundamentals of dancing On2, covering proper footwork, musical pacing and timing. Musical tips will be given on how to feel the On2 beat much more effectively and how to enjoy it differently from dancing On1 so one understands the music better. Students will convert commonly used turn patterns On1 to On2 timing so they can focus more on the timing rather than the choreography. Since most On1 turn patterns were originally based on On2, transition will be easier and less complicated. However, an intermediate level turn pattern On2, along with styling (body isolations & hand movements) body movements that go with the accent, will also be introduced at the end of the class.

You can register online through your profile. We are still looking for one more workshop topic for April so get in your request soon!

Here is the second part of the article I wrote called “Salsa Dancing Etiquette – A Guide for Salsa Students and Dancers”.

• Turning down a dance
It cannot be stressed enough that rejecting someone’s offer to dance can be a very negative experience for that dancer and has even led some to give up dancing. Do your best to accept every offer unless you are uncomfortable with the person. Remember that people have very long memories and one rejection (for whatever innocent reason it may be) may be remembered for a long time. The salsa scene is a small one and people do relay stories about others. Be as gracious as possible. If there is a legitimate reason for the refusal, please specify it (e.g., I have just been dancing up a storm and am taking a break, I promised someone else this dance but maybe we can dance later, I am just about to leave, etc). Don’t forget to ask that person to dance later on if it is possible as a show of respect. Try to never reject a person and then go dance with another person immediately after. Dancers, especially beginners, are trying to build, gain and maintain confidence. This can be very hurtful and affect a person’s ability to ask others to dance.

If you are on the other side of this scene where you have been rejected for a dance, keep a practical and positive perspective and remember that it is not a rejection of you as a person but potentially the circumstance. There are many other dancers who would be more than happy to accept a dance.

• Ladies – how to get asked to dance
If you are not comfortable in the asking role, there are many tips to use to be more approachable. Always make yourself visible. Stand at the edge of the dance floor. Make eye contact with potential dance partners around you and those coming off the dance floor. Let your interest and eagerness to dance show and never stop smiling. Remember the rules of body language – gestures such as crossing your arms, looking down, looking bored, uninterested or unapproachable and congregating with groups of friends are just a few things to avoid. Dance with anyone who asks as women who dance throughout the night are seen by male dancers as more likely to accept their invitation to dance. A man is more likely to ask a woman as she is walking off the dance floor after completing a dance then one who is standing around. Also, the more partners you accept, the more dancers you get to know, and this opens up new networks and groups of dancers to you, as dancers often introduce you to their friends and fellow dancers.

• How to read your partner’s skill level
Every partner you dance with will be at a different level. If you are a male the best process to use is to start slowly and gain momentum according to your partners’ skill level. Begin by executing basic footwork, turns and basic cross body variations. If your partner is following with ease then slowly introduce more difficult moves. If you are a beginner female, specify this when you are asked to dance so the male is aware of your position and can work with your skill level.

Part 3 coming up in the next blog post!

Compañia Flamenco José Porcel
Friday, November 21, 2008 at 8pm
Roy Thomson Hall | $69.50 – $39.50
Renowned dancer and choreographer José Porcel is one of Spain’s finest flamenco artists. He brings his premiere dance troupe, infused with irresistible erotic appeal and irrepressible energy to Roy Thomson Hall. FOR TICKETS CALL 416-872-4255

Toronto, ON, October 21, 2008 – Spain’s flamenco superstar José Porcel and his celebrated troupe of dancers, singers and musicians, showcase the art of flamenco with vivid costumes, fiery footwork and soaring vocals at Roy Thomson Hall on Friday, November 21, 2008 at 8pm. The world’s most joyous dance is transformed into an explosion of rhythm, colors, and emotions in the company’s new touring show “Alma Flamenco” (The Spirit and Soul of Flamenco), a seductive blend of traditional and modern flamenco.

Compañia Flamenco José Porcel has showcased flamenco throughout the world, providing an invaluable window on Spain’s rich history. The company creates a dramatic evening of precision and pageantry in a new program of electrifying solos and ensemble pieces including a taranto (a sensual duet), a rondena (a light yet rhythmic piece with the women of the company), the farruca and solea, joyous group pieces of choreographic complexity; and the great Porcel in two solos: the virile seguirilla and a largely improvised alegrias.

Born in Seville, José Porcel began performing the passionate folkloric dances of his Spanish ancestors at the age of 13. He made his professional debut with the Ballet de Valencia in 1989 and went on to become one of his country’s leading flamenco dancers and choreographers, touring the world as a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Spain and Compañia Espanola de Antonio Marquez. As a choreographer, Porcel’s lavish music and dance spectacles display both abundant creative genius and a desire to challenge convention while honoring tradition. Porcel leads his renowned company with a focus on unique choreographic interpretations of traditional flamenco styles.

Flamenco dancing, originally conceived as a way of accentuating rhythms while singing, is one of the world’s most richly expressive traditions. Bright costumes, sensual movement and exhilarating musical accompaniment have made flamenco one of the most popular forms of folkloric dance. It is believed that flamenco originated during the 15th century, when Gypsies arrived in the Andalucian region of Spain, bearing with them a culture that was a mixture of Arabic, Egyptian, Jewish and Indian.

This performance by Compañia Flamenco José Porcel is one of seven concerts chosen this season for Share the Music, the Corporation’s arts and education outreach program. 250 tickets have been distributed to under-served youth with the purpose of enriching their lives through exposure to world-class performers and related educational activities. The young guests will also attend a pre-concert flamenco workshop led by members of the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company. Share the Music is sponsored by Sun Life Financial and supported by many individuals and organizations. For more information visit http://www.roythomson.com/shareMusic.cfm.

On Sunday November 16th from 3:15pm – 5:15pm Teddy Olaso, Guest Instructor from United Salseros, will be hosting a workshop for us at Empress Walk on New York Style Cha Cha Cha. The cost of this 2 hour workshop is $35 for TDS students and friends and $30 for helpers and includes entry to the Sunday Social that will follow where we will play some great Cha Cha Cha for you to practice your new moves. Here is a description of the workshop. Registration is available through the website by logging into your profiles.

New York Style Cha-Cha-Cha (not be confused with ballroom version) is one of the few variations of this dance that places a heavy emphasis on musicality and partner-work play. It has both an elegant and funky feel at the same time. In this workshop, proper footwork fundamentals, leading, following and timing will be covered to provide a more comprehensive approach to this workshop. This includes graceful hand/arm movements and use of various parts of the body to accentuate the rhythms of the dance. The class is geared towards more advanced-beginner – intermediate level students and can help familiarize students who are also learning dancing On2. Must have completed level 2 or receive instructor permission to attend.

Tracie Macko, Salsa and Zumba Instructor
Tracie first fell in love with salsa in 2002 at a club in her hometown of Winnipeg, MB. Moving to Toronto that same year, Tracie saw the diverse dance and performing arts community that Toronto had to offer and immediately immersed herself into the Latin dance social scene. She quickly obtained a position as a Salsa dance group and private class instructor at Soles Dance Studio, and was a main dance instructor there until Soles closed its doors in the summer of 2004.

Since then Tracie has continued on as a private On1 Salsa Dance instructor, and, in 2005, expanded her teaching into the world of dance fitness, teaching ‘Zumba Fitness’ and Salsa Cardio at various fitness facilities throughout the GTA. Tracie has also established herself as a creative, dedicated and energetic dance performer and choreographer, making appearances on numerous Toronto stages in a variety of dance genres, ranging from cabaret style jazz to Salsa to Afro-Brazilian and Samba. She is currently a performing member of The Dance Migration, The Orient Dance Company and Las Gatas Entertainment. She is also a “regular” on the social Salsa dancing scene, dancing both On1 and On2 at clubs in the Toronto area, and is known for her unique style that reflects her diverse dance background.

We know that many of you have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to finally offer a salsa trip to Cuba! Join Evan and I on this trip…here are the details!

“Toronto Dance Salsa is taking you to Havana! We have teamed up with the global leaders in salsa holidays, Club Dance Holidays, to bring you a unique holiday this Spring. 7 nights of Salsa in Havana from 21 March 2009 to 28 March 2009. Salsa in Havana – what more could you ask for? This holiday is designed to completely immerse you in Cuban culture and the Cuban dance scene, both of which are energetic, very real and totally spontaneous. It’s all about forgetting who you are, where you come from and living in the moment. Enjoy 15 hours of Salsa classes with some of the most exciting Cuban Salsa teachers and dancers in Havana. We have a whole team in Havana dedicated to assist you in the classes in the mornings, take you to the best Salsa matinee afternoon dance sessions in the afternoons and accompany you at night dancing with you until late in intimate clubs, where the dancing is often energized by live bands.

The dancing …

You will love our team of professional Cuban dancers. What makes this Cuban Salsa trip special is the team of Cuban dancers who come out with you at night to the dance venues in Havana. This means that there are more dance partners to go round and enables you to dance with not just Cubans but Cuban trained dancers!

Cuban Salsa is about truly “inhabiting” your body, really dancing WITH your partner and feeling the music in your soul. You will find that there is more fluidity and body movement compared to LA or New York Salsa due to Cuban Salsa being at one with Salsa’s ancestors – Son, Rumba, Afro-Cuban dance, Cha Cha Cha and Mambo. Our team of Cuban instructors truly want to see you dance like a Cuban, and will work with you on the “feel” of the fluid Cuban body movement, as well as on the moves and the footwork.
